Submission and Service

Blessed to be with the small group this week. Here’s the info you need to know:

  1. This week read both the Disciplines of Submission and Service, pgs. 110-140.
  2. Here is some more info on what we discussed last night
  • Foster wrote another great book on the Discipline of Simplicity found here: Freedom of Simplicity
  • Here is the handout I passed around last night for those who missed it. It is a huge help for spending time in Solitude: Silence and Solitude We will have a few of these days corporately…together…if that makes sense.
  • Remember to pray for Ted in Austin and Portia in Uganda.

In Christ,

Paul

Moving from Advocacy-Driven Religion to Follow Me Faith

“Jesus didn’t begin his ministry with an outlined agenda. Instead, he launched his public work with two simple words: “Follow me.” And then he set out on a living lecture to illustrate to us what following him looked like. He healed the sick and fed the hungry, he worked miracles that still boggle modern minds. He preached the kingdom, promoted a new way of living, and then bore his cross to a hill called the place of the skull where he offered his life as a sacrifice for all.”

- Jonathan Merrit

Simplicity and Solitude

Last night was great. We are so blessed to have such great teachers around us. I’m so glad that we are going through Spiritual Disciplines this early on in the year, so that we can apply all that we’re doing, as a community, for the rest of the year.

The next few disciplines are going to be extremely applicable to our community as they are the outward disciplines. We’re going to be spending the next two weeks studying and applying these. We will read about Simplicity and Solitude this week, and Submission and Service the next.

Here’s your homework:

  1. The Disciplines of Simplicity and Solitude: pgs. 79-109. 30 pages so make sure to pace yourself if you are a slow reader. I recommend giving yourself an hour at a time so you can read a big chunk and understand the stream of thought.
  2. Remember next Monday we will continue our fast through breakfast and lunch. Those two meal times we will spend in the word, prayer, and worship. For those who are able to join me, during lunch, I will be in the mini-chapel located in the main sanctuary. This week we will focus on praying for our discipleship group. Individuals by name, praying that we will be sent, sold out, open to opportunities, etc… I will send out some verses and helps Sunday night as you begin your fast.

Also check out this interesting article I read this morning: Wake Up Call

Love you!

Study and Fasting (the week of June 4)

Hey everyone! Here is your work for the week:

  1. Read “The Discipline of Study” pgs. 62-76. Remember Mark Campbell will be with us next Monday!
  2. For a reminder, and to those who missed out last night,I sent out a challenge last night for us to engage, for one month, in a corporate fast, once a week, and we’ll begin starting next Monday morning. We will fast through breakfast and lunch, and then eat and take communion together at discipleship that evening. Please call me with any questions.
  • Prep for your fasting: finish listening to messages that I handed out. If you lost them they can be found here: “A Hunger for God“.
  • Here a couple of helps for you during your time of prayer and worship: “Prayer Chart” “Things to Pray For“. The times that we would normally eat that day,

Remember to pray for your partner every day, and pray with your partner once a week. And remember to wage war against complacency make you relationship with God NUMBER 1!

I love you all dearly!

In Christ,

Paul

Hey everyone! Great conversation last week about prayer, I hope you were encouraged and challenged. This week we are going to take it easy and have a BBQ at the Keim’s residence. We’ll start at the regular time (or a little earlier to help set up) and we will enjoy some food and fellowship together.

Feel free to bring a treat to share with about 4-6 people, if you can, to show off your amazing cooking/buying-at-Safeway skill. Please post in the comments what you can bring so that we don’t end up with only a Baked Potato and 20 bags of hotdog buns or something.

Homework:

  1. Discipline of Fasting pgs. 47-61. (Be read by June 4th, so you have some time.)
  2. Continue listening to the messages Paul handed out last week. There are 8 messages in all, so make sure to set aside the time. You should have them all listened to by June 4th.

Love you all.
